It is essential to strike a balance between promotional posts and providing value to members to avoid coming across as spammy.

6. Support and Help

Groups can offer a space for individuals to seek support, advice, and assistance from others who may have similar experiences or expertise.

This help can range from emotional, or technical support or guidance.

7. Ease of communication

For both personal and professional purposes, Facebook groups can be useful for organizing events, meetups, workshops, or gatherings.

It facilitates communication and coordination among attendees.

All in all, depending on your goals and interests, Facebook groups can serve various purposes for you and your potential members.

Step by step: How to create a Facebook group

Note:

To create a group on Facebook, you must be a Facebook user, meaning you must have an account.

Here are simple steps you can follow to create a Facebook group:

Step 1: Launch your Facebook either on your desktop or mobile app and sign into your account.

Step 2: On your account page, on the left-hand side of your window (if you are using the desktop version) is the icon labeled Groups

Click on the Groups icon which should lead you to the next page with various options including joining a group, or creating a new group and you can see the groups you have joined, if any.

Step 3: On the Groups page, on your left-hand side pane is the Create New group link, click on it.

Create New Facebook Group

This should pop up a new page on which you will still see on your left-hand side pane the create group option, and your Facebook image placeholder as admin.

On the new group page, you will be able to;

1. Create your group name

Below the image placeholder is a textbox asking you to write your group name. Enter your preferred group name for example “Tree Lovers”.

Tip:

Remember to make the group name simple and clear to whoever you want to invite, and it should be relevant to the group’s purpose.

2. Set the group privacy

Just below the group name text box is a privacy text box with a dropdown menu indicating two options.

Facebook Group Privacy Settings

The first option is Public; if you choose this option for your group, anyone in your contact list will be able to see who is in the group and what they post.

So if your interest is to make your conversations known to everyone, then this option may work for your new group.

The second option is Private; only members whom you have accepted into the group will be able to see who is in the group as well as what they post.

This option is secretive in that it does not allow others, even if they are in your contacts, to see your discussions.

Anyone wishing to join the group will have to send a request to join first.

Because groups attract people with common interests and for specific reasons, it is probably better to go for a private option to keep group conversations private.

Note however that in an attempt to protect the privacy of group members, private groups cannot be changed to public.

3. Set group visibility

You can now set your group’s visibility by tapping on the arrow in the text box below the privacy box to access a drop-down menu.

Here, you can set it to either visible or hidden

When you decide to make your group visible it means that anyone who searches for it will be able to see it, and it appears in the news feed located under suggested groups for people to join.

When you choose to set your group to hidden, then it will only appear to members you have added, but after a search.

This option makes your Facebook group exclusive.

Step 4: add group members

Still on the new groups page, you can add people you want to be in the Facebook group. You do this by inviting each contact.

Below the visibility textbox is the invite members’ textbox. Here you can enter the names or email addresses of people you want to include in the group.

Alternatively, you can choose from the list of suggestions.

When you click in the textbox, it displays suggestions – names you can choose from to join the group.

You can choose your group membership from this by checking the box against each preferred contact name.

After you have checked all you wish to invite to the group, you can click the send invitations option.

In addition, you can also invite via QR code. To do this, the admin can create a QR Code that can be scanned to direct people to join your group.

Keep in mind though that some people may reject your invitation, especially if they do not understand what the group is all about.

Mind you, a group brings people with similar interests together, so if you invite someone who does not identify with the group’s interests you risk rejection.

Note:

As you build your group by adding information, it appears on the screen and is displayed in your main window. At this point all the links are inactive.

Step 5: Click on the Create button located at the bottom left side pane of your screen.

Step 6. Customize the group; at this point you have your Facebook group created, now you can go ahead and customize it by making a more detailed description; adding a cover photo or including tags, among others.

You can also create events and make posts, photos or video uploads at this point.

How to manage a Facebook group

Okay, so you have your account created, named, populated and customized, but how do you manage it; how do you keep it going?

There are several things involved in Facebook group management, here are a few tips to help you keep it going:

Set clear rules and guidelines; it is important to set some boundaries for the group.

This should come through clear and understandable rules for members, plus clear consequences for violating those rules.

Engage actively with members; you should keep the questions coming, and keep responding to comments, as well as starting conversations in the group.

Keep encouraging member participation and promote positive engagement.

Moderate the group content; remember that groups exist for specific reasons and hence attract people of common interests.

It is important to make sure that all content shared or posted still fits within the group boundaries and is of interest to the members.

You have the authority to remove any content that violates the group rules and guidelines.

Manage membership; based on the group criteria, you can approve or reject membership requests.

Regularly review the list, if need be, you can remove inactive or problematic members.

These and more activities in the group will help you keep the group going and actively serve the purpose for which you created it.

Remember to also collaborate with all admins and moderators.
